U.S. claims interactions are “strategic competition.”
The new foreign minister of China, Qin Gang—previously China’s ambassador to the U.S.—issued a warning to the United States. His comments came in response to a White House statement that framed interactions with China as a “strategic competition” and not a “conflict.”
Minister Qin said the administration’s “competition” was an “all-round containment and suppression, a zero-sum game” for China. He stated the U.S. “wants China not to respond in words or actions when slandered or attacked.”
He added, “Such competition is a reckless gamble, with the stakes being the fundamental interests of the two peoples and even the future of humanity.”
Minister Qin, who is the number two diplomat of the Chinese Communist Party, said, “If the U.S. does not put on the brakes and continues down the wrong path, no amount of guardrails can stop the derailment and rollover into confrontation and conflict.”
Ned Price, the soon-departing spokesman for the State Department, said, “This is not about containing China. This is not about suppressing China. This is not about holding China back. We want to have that constructive competition that is fair and doesn’t veer into that conflict.”
